As a creative writing, rhetoric, and journalism professor, and elementary educator I’ve helped hundreds of voices evolve, find their pitch and rhythm, and develop their uniqueness and authority.
Working for a decade in arts colleges, I’ve helped folks in the creative economy write eloquently about their arts disciplines to craft meaningful artistic statements and effective show proposals. I’ve provided polish to grant and residency applications.
I’ve helped birth first poetry manuscripts for contests, publication, BFA and MFA graduation. I’ve coached young and mid-career journalists in finding or refinding the hearts of their stories (especially after prolonged inquiry and extended research). I’ve launched poets and journalists into multimedia portfolios for digital spaces.
As a kids book author and poet in the schools I’ve connected young learners with the tools to love, play, and tinker with language. I’ve challenged them to combine words and images with attention to metaphoric thinking, the power of juxtaposition, and joy of good timing.
I’ve also been a lovingly-edited writer, so I know the familiar interplay, back and forth across the desk (or internet), that is the collaboration between writer, editor, and intended audience.
